An Animal Shelter Overrun and Out of Compassion

~Update~
Most of you know some of the story of these two sisters who were found wandering nearby Oliver Middle School Thursday morning.

Many of you can add to this story, parts that I am missing because so many of you assisted in so many ways. Because of that I feel like so many of us are connected to these girls in some way. Our hearts are involved and most of us want the very best out come for them. What ever that looks like.

In many of our minds, that looks like them both being able to be reunited with their family. So far no one has claimed them. Thursday morning the Golden retriever was caught and the Great Dane ran. The Golden was taken to the Shelter in hopes of being reunited with her owners and eventually her companion.

Throughout the day many of you spotted and tried to help catch the Dane (Hope). Coming home on Thursday, my daughter and I saw her narrowly miss being run over on 111th St by Tulsa Tech here in Broken Arrow. We stopped to try to help her. She ran into the woods.

A man and woman stopped to help, since they had dog food, water and a leash we left so that there wasn’t too many people there to keep her scared off and give her a better chance at getting help.

We went home but couldn’t stop thinking about if she was ok. With no new updates on her, we decided to drive past to see if the people were still there or if anything changed.

The people were gone and Hope was now lying in the grass on the school side. So we sat in the grass nearby and just watched her. I watched her approach kids on bikes and lay down in the grass as they rode off. Realizing that she was interested in kids, I let my daughter sit a few feet ahead of me. “Hope” let my daughter slowly move closer to her. She was tired and breathing heavily. Her ribs and hips were showing. My daughter tossed some food into the grass which made Hope stand and bark. I moved ahead of my daughter for her safety although her bark didn’t sound threatening but more like she was talking to her.

We went about this for hours into the dark of the night. Cars began to stop because it was so dark, they couldn’t see me but with my daughter under the light of the street light they could see her and thought she was alone. Thank you to those that stopped to see if she was ok. I was just a few feet ahead of her and could hear the kindness of our neighbors ❤️

Hope eventually let me get about 20 ft from her after hours of slowly moving closer to her. Until a big semi truck pulled out of the parking lot and she got spooked and off into the woods she went again.

By this time, a rope and sandwich meat had been brought to me. I had called the non emergency line. The person that answered was extremely annoyed and sounded frustrated about the call. I explained that I was just worried about the dogs well-being and I was told that animal control couldn’t and wouldn’t help until the next day. They said they had already received so many calls about the dog and were aware. So of course no one came out. It didn’t feel like any officials were concerned about the welfare of the pet. Several of you had called throughout the day. She has been out in the heat all day. She was clearly too skinny, too hot and not in a safe situation. Not to mention causing a safety issue for vehicles and people (as I was l later told by a city employee).

My oldest son and his friend joined out efforts but it was too late. She was hiding. Someone reported my car as abandoned to 911 and the sheriff came out to investigate.

After questioning me about the situation and telling me that my car was in the way (on the side of the driveway after hours) he let it go and left. It was after 10:30pm at this point so I said a prayer for Hope and called it a night.

I watched the updates all day and saw so many of you and your efforts on Friday. 🥰 Some of you spent hours Friday evening after I got off work looking for her. I prayed you’d be able to get her. After the updates stopped my daughter and I went back out, sat in the grass hoping she’d come out of hiding again. We didn’t see her late Friday evening.

We got up early Saturday morning to go find her. It had been over 100 for several days. She had been on concrete and gravel and thankfully grass. But going on day 3 and from the posts the night before, she was getting more and more exhausted.

When we spotted her in the grass by Tulsa Tech, my son jumped out of my car with his rope hoping to get close enough to get it to her collar or lasso her in a last resort effort.
But. Off into the woods she went.

It was getting to the point that this baby needed to come in. I messaged Tina, who had mentioned to she would bring her trap and help if Hope had a foster. So many of you recommended her in the comments as well. Let me tell you, she and her grandson were fantastic to work with! (Thank you again Tina for coming out when you did!)

Animal control pulled up while I was waiting for Tina. She got out of her truck shaking her head, obviously very irritated. She started telling me that they are pushing the dog into the woods. That they had stopped rescue attempts because she herself had almost been hit by a car. That they don’t want the dog to cause an accident or be hit and they don’t want people out trying to catch it. She told me that if the call had come into the shelter and not through dispatch, they wouldn’t of even come out.

I explained that I didn’t make the call. That I was fine with her leaving at this point. I wasnt chasing the dog, I was taking a very slow and easy approach and that Tina was on her way with her trap. I asked her if my older daughter could go to the shelter to pick up a blanket that the retriever had been laying on and she acted like that would be a big problem.

I explained that since it’s a big problem for them to help the community catch this dog, it would be in everyone best interest to get her sisters scent on something that we can put with the trap. She reluctantly agreed to call ahead and ask for the blanket to be rubbed on her sister to make sure her scent is on it.

Tina showed up, the question was asked if we can get the retriever to use her to help coax Hope out. To which we were told that would not be allowed.

Thankfully the help of animal control want necessary to catch her. We are grateful that the obliged the blanket when my daughter got there. Hope loves laying on it. Tina got her trap set up and I ran to Walmart to buy dog food and treats. While checking out my phone rang, “we got her!” Tina said. Explaining my relief and gratitude is hard to express. I had been out for 6 hour at that point and now we knew she was safe. ❤️

The next effort. The big challenge, that I didn’t realize would be more difficult and heartbreaking.

Reuniting two sisters.

If you have made it this far, thank you. I needed you to know that part to understand this next part.

These two girls are either lost from their parents. We have had hope that we would find their owners. And had faith that everything would turn out great for them. Unfortunately, so far it has been an uphill struggle. As far as I can tell, their owners haven’t been heard from. 😞

I have pledged to help find that if possible. But. I have also made it so that they have a safe and loving forever family here in my home.

And.

Set out to reunite them. If they can’t reunite with their owners, at least they should be able to reunite with each other. 💔

I have contacted the Broken Arrow Animal Shelter. I tried calling them right away on Saturday. Of course they were closed until Tuesday (today) at 11:30 with not after hour contact (unless it’s an emergency 911). I sent them a message on Facebook. I commented on the Golden Retrievers picture (which they put up right away.

First thing this morning at 8am (because that is when employees arrive at the shelter) I was went down there before work. Hoping to talk to someone. To explain the situation. Surely they would find the importance for these two girls to be reunited after they have likely been dumped on the side of the road (if owners are found and something explainable makes since please take no offense).
No one would come to the door. I called. No answer.

After 11:30, I did receive a Facebook message reply. Telling me how sweet the retriever is. And thanking me for getting her sister. They also asked if someone messaged me about the other missing Black and White Dane. 🤦🏼‍♀️

I went down there on my lunch break to introduce myself and give them my info in case an owner didn’t have Facebook and contacted them. They weren’t interested in my phone number, didn’t ask me anything. I gave them my business card with my cell phone number anyway.

I brought Hopes pink collar and the lady at the counter said “oh my gosh, they are definitely sisters!” I started to tear up. The collars as suspected are exactly identical. The Golden Retriever is being kept behind the counter with the front desk lady. She jumped up on the counter and started sniffing the collar like crazy. The lady said “she knows that’s her sisters!!”

Yes! Yes she does!

I told her that I would like to foster her during her stay (yes, I understand that the BA Shelter doesn’t do that) But. I’m also sure that it’s not often that you have two adult dogs from the same house with a family willing to let them be reunited like this.

Of course she told me no. I asked her if there would be a priority place on placing these two girls together since they have a loving forever home to call theirs. She told me that decision would have to be made by the boss and I’d have to call him after 2 today.

So I asked to see how the retriever does with me. We went to a meet room. She smelled her sister on my pants. Placed her nose to mine. Layed her paws on my lap and let me love on her.

How do I not ask for help in reuniting these two sweet babies?

I called the “boss” this afternoon. I spoke with Tim. I told him the same. I wanted them to have my info in case the owners come looking for it them. He guaranteed me that they would have no problem adopting the retriever. I explained my concerns about separating the two of them. Hope whines and crys still although it has lessened. It is so sad to know that she is missing her sister and my hands feel tied. I explained that it seems better that they be in a loving home rather than letting one go off to a golden retriever rescue and separating them forever. 😞

I told him that I was told by a volunteer that I would need to be there as early as 4 or 5am. And his staff told me overnight. To which he told me that it could be more like camping in the parking lot 36 hours prior to opening. That to him tells him that the potential owner would be a serious and good owner. 😞

I explain that I work full time and raise my daughter. There would be no way I could do that even as important as it is to reunite these girls. His explanation was that he couldn’t break city protocol because it would be unfair. 💔

I want our community to know what’s going on and for those of your who have helped, prayer and pulled for these fur babies to say a prayer.

I would never ask for or advocate for any angry calls/messages to the shelter or city but a reminder of the importance of what’s best for the animals that they are working so hard for might go a long way.
